Domino’s Pizza Tracker

When we first started building candidates.fyi, we wanted to create something recognizable to the world.

Something that just made sense.

I feel like HR Tech gets so lost in creating tools that are foreign to what we know as humans. Our brains work in distinct ways, and when we’re given a platform that doesn’t come off as “human,” it becomes a struggle to get teams to adopt it.

We wanted to change this narrative and create something familiar, simple, and extremely powerful.

Enter the Domino’s Pizza Tracker

The Domino’s Pizza Tracker has helped contribute over $12 BILLION in company value since 2011. The pizza tracker was part of a much larger turnaround that took Domino’s from a struggling pizza company to one of the most successful food franchises in history.

But here is the part that they don’t tell anyone - The Domino’s Pizza Tracker doesn’t work the way we think it does. It’s a simple time that uses average order completion times to calculate which step in the process your pizza is likely to be.

But, as a result, the pizza tracker became a self-fulfilling prophecy. It held Domino’s restaurants to a higher level of accountability and organizational efficiency. The pizza tracker wasn’t keeping status, it was setting pace.

This one little tool demanded the speed and excellence of hundreds of individual Domino’s franchises across the country. Those values bled into every other facet of the business by holding a standard of transparency, speed, and accountability to the pizza production.

That’s why I love to draw the comparison between the Domino’s pizza tracker and candidate.fyi’s application tracker (see image below).

Tropic’s candidate.fyi portal

We’re striving to accomplish the same outcome for ourselves and our users. By helping bring transparency and efficiency to the hiring process, we’re helping companies improve the overall candidate experience.

candidate.fyi’s application tracker and portal are fully connected to a company’s ATS. Candidate-facing stages are mapped back to ATS stages, so it doesn’t have to be a 1-1 scenario.

During early conversations with clients, we constantly hear two things:

  1. I don’t know if we’re ready to provide this level of transparency to candidates.

  2. Our internal processes, stages, and systems are so messy and inefficient that we need to figure that out before we can show it to candidates.

But once things get up and running, we hear the same thing over and over again:

  1. I can’t imagine ever going back to not having a candidate portal

  2. candidate.fyi helped us create efficiency and get our processes in order.

Brutal transparency with candidates is a mindset, a shift in the old-age way of thinking. Once we power through that mindset and start to share these sorts of things with candidates, we realize how powerful it is.

This is where our team talks a lot about challenging the status quo. candidate.fyi isn’t just an application tracker or candidate portal. It’s a mindset shift to care deeply about candidates and their feelings.

How can we create efficiency, transparency, and, most importantly, humanity in our hiring process?

Change your mindset from: candidates need to do their own work, due diligence, and research.

to

Candidates are an extension of our brand, potential customers, and referrers. Let’s package everything up for them in one place and provide the best possible experience for them.

Let’s give them brutal transparency.

Let’s give them a home during our interview process where they always know where they are in the process, what’s upcoming, who they’re meeting with, and when. Where they can schedule all of their interviews, provide feedback, prepare for interviews, and set them up for success.

You’ll immediately start to see the results of this kind of shift.
